Life at CWE – Driving Continuous Improvement: A Quality Manager’s Perspective

22nd September, 2025

At CWE, we’re proud to be part of the UK rail industry. We believe it’s a great place to work and that our friendly team showcases the best of the sector. In this series, Life at CWE, we’ll be providing a glimpse into the life of our staff. We hope this will give readers a sense of the work our brilliant people do and the diverse range of talents and skills that make up the world of rail engineering.
This month, we sit down with experienced Welder Jordan Cooke, who has just been promoted to Quality Manager.
What do you enjoy about your job?
What I enjoy most is seeing the full picture now. As a welder, I was focused on getting the job done right and then onto the next. Now, as a quality manager, I’m still tied to the work, but I get to step back and make sure the entire process runs efficiently and up to standard. I still get stuck in to the hands on stuff, but I also enjoy problem-solving, coaching newer guys, and helping the shop produce high-quality work that we’re all proud of. There’s a lot of satisfaction in knowing our work is safe, durable, and built to spec.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My day usually starts early — I’ll do a walkthrough of the floor first thing, check in with team leads, and review any issues from the previous shift. Then I spend time reviewing weld maps, inspection reports, and verifying documentation. I’m also involved in root cause analysis when something doesn’t meet spec — whether it’s a bad weld, incorrect material, or a missed step in the procedure. I hold quality meetings, train apprentices or newer welders, and liaise with clients or inspectors when needed. It’s a mix of desk work and hands-on shop floor involvement.
What do you find most rewarding about your job?
For me, it’s seeing the improvements in the team. When you help a member of staff understand why certain procedures matter, and then you see them take pride in doing it right, that’s really rewarding. Also, when a customer comes back and compliments the job, you know how many people have been involved with getting that job right and playing a part. We’re a great team here and there’s a real pride in knowing that the product left the shop safe, strong and built to last. After 14 years here, I still love it!
What advice would you give to an apprentice just starting out?
Take the time to learn the why behind everything, not just the how. Pay attention to detail, especially when it comes to tolerances, weld integrity, and safety procedures. Rail has some of the strictest quality and safety standards in engineering — and for good reason. Learn the codes, learn the standards, and learn the reasons behind them. Listen to the experienced people around you. You’ll pick up things in the yard or on site that they don’t teach in the classroom and that’s invaluable to your career.
Tell me something interesting about yourself!
I’m a keen golfer, and love to go to major events and watch them too. When I’m not at work or spending time with my young family, you can find me on a golf course!
