Apprenticeships are the future of our growing business – Nick Andrew

2nd August, 2022

CWE’s Managing Director Nick Andrew started his career as an apprentice and maintenance engineer – and throughout his time here, has become somewhat of a champion for apprenticeships. Talking about his time at CWE, he praises the firm’s rapid growth, focus on the rail industry and “massive” future potential. These are all things the MD is clearly, and rightly, proud of – but it’s when he talks about apprenticeships that his passion really shines through. Describing apprenticeships as the future of the industry, he explains why taking on young trainees is worth the time and effort.

Question: Looking back at your time in the industry and at CWE, how have the last few years compared generally – has there been much change?

Nick: CWE has changed dramatically, both internal and externally. We have rapidly expanded into rail – both passenger and freight. Within the industry, rail is being promoted as a greener alternative and carbon green impacts are being measured.

Question: What excites you most about the new direction CWE has taken recently? What potential do you see?

Nick: Our potential is massive, it’s exciting times for CWE and the market. We can make a real difference to our customers and add value both directly and indirectly.

Question: How have customers responded to CWE’s Centre of Excellence? And what plans do you have for the Centre’s future?

Nick: We have had lots of positive interest around the launch, we now need to establish the centre with current products while integrating new products.

Question: What are the biggest industry trends at the moment and how is CWE responding? And what are the biggest challenges that you see?

Nick: The biggest challenges are breaking mindsets within the industry. In this regard, CWE is different – our people, values, and standards are around raising the bar for customer solutions, delivery, and growing value add relationships.

Question: You started your career as an apprentice, what do apprenticeships mean to you?

Nick: I’m incredibly passionate about apprenticeships. Apprenticeships are the future of all engineering and manufacturing sectors. We need to invest in the next generation to safeguard and create more engineering expertise and jobs within the industry.

Question: What would you say to anyone considering their future and looking at apprenticeships?

Nick: Invest the time and effort to employ apprentices, growing your own employees who understand your culture and grow with your business.
