Meet the Team

Nick Andrew – Managing Director

Nick has over 30 years’ engineering experience working across sectors including rail aerospace, nuclear, automotive, oil & gas and defence. He started his career as an apprentice and maintenance engineer, and over the course of his career, has developed and delivered high specification and complex parts, assemblies, and projects.

Specialising in business growth and turnaround, with a strong operational and commercial background, Nick’s career has seen him work for companies including Newburgh Engineering, TATA, Wabtec, before joining CWE as operations director in 2019 and being appointed managing director in 2021.

Nick studied at Leeds Metropolitan University, where was awarded the Institute of Director (IOD) Certificate of Company Direction.

Oliver Baker – Chairman

Oliver joined CWE as chairman in 2014, bringing over 14 years’ experience working as CEO or chairman in manufacturing and technology businesses backed by private-equity. Prior to this, Oliver was an Ernst & Young partner from 1997 to 2006 following a career in investment banking in the City.

Oliver has a degree in Economic History from Durham University and spent three years in the Army.

Phil Brown – Business Development Director

With over 30 years’ experience in the UK rail and automotive industries, Phil has worked with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Tier 1 companies, SMEs and trade associations to help them achieve their business targets.

With a passion for working with SMEs with ambitious growth plans, Phil joined CWE in June 2021 as business development director. A highly-qualified sales and business development director, Phil is responsible for driving business growth.

David Bates – Commercial Manager

Dave joined CWE in 2004 as a coupler fitter, achieving both welding and inspection accreditations, before being promoted to coupler shop supervisor 2010, production manager in 2012 and operations manager 2014. He was appointed commercial manager in 2020.

He is responsible for managing CWE’s key customer accounts, and is the first port of call for current and new customers, helping to address their needs and requirements.

With extensive knowledge of CWE’s core business activities and products, and a passion for engineering, Dave also authored a third-party approved conversion specification, which is unique to CWE.

Dave has a Chartered Management institute degree (level 7) in strategic management and leadership.

Col Jaques

Col Jaques – Operations Manager

Col has more than 32 years engineering experience. He started his managerial career with British Rail before transferring over to Unipart Rail, giving him16 years experience within the rail industry so far. Col is adept at developing and implementing lean practices and well versed in rail industry ways of working.

Since joining CWE in 2005 as site manager, Col has headed up multiple site teams and has been instrumental in the delivery of responsive and planned major outage projects at numerous power stations throughout the UK. He is currently responsible for overseeing operational activities across the CWE manufacturing facilities and for ensuring we adhere to manufacturing specifications and meet on-time deliveries targets. He is also responsible for coordinating and managing our off site projects.
