CWE Install TOS Horizontal Boring Machine

CWE are proud to announce that they have recently purchased and installed a TOS WHQ 13.8 Horizontal Boring machine at their Crowle Wharf site.

The machine was sourced from Germany where it had been making large parts for the Energy Generation market. CWE plan to use it to provide similar high precision work throughout the UK.

TOS Machine pictured in its previous location on Germany and arriving at the Crowle Wharf site during March 2015:

The full specification of the machine is as follows:

TOS WHQ 13.8 horizontal boring machine
Heidenhain TNC 426
X = 3.5m.
Y = 2.5m.
W Column Travel = 1.25m.
Z Spindle = 0.8m.
Table Size = 2.2 x 1.8m.
Table Capacity 12 Tonne.

The machine has many accessories such as a facing head, universal angle head and special angle head with extension spindle steady. All of which cement its boring capability for the offshore wind turbine market.

The machine will be set up in the newly designated large machine shop in Crowle Wharf, utilising the availability of a 10 tonne overhead crane. This new machine gives CWE an exciting capability in precision boring of large items such as wind turbine gearboxes, centrifuges and large machined fabrications.

Chris Brown, Managing Director, Mark Lifsey, Operations Director and Nigel Sheppard, Machine Shop Manager, travelled to Germany in March 2015 to see the machine running before presenting a case for the machine to be purchased to the board. The board was fully supportive of the investment and funding for the machine was provided by CWE’s bank.

CWE’s Commercial Director Ian Siddle commented, “For years we have wanted to have this type of machine and its’ inherent capabilities at CWE – this machine is a major step forward for CWE and we already have customers interested in what it can do.”
